Explosion Claims 3 Police Officers While Executing Property Removal Procedure in Italy
A trio of officers lost their lives and at least 15 others were hurt in an apparently intentional gas explosion at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.
How It Happened
The blast took place as police and firefighters entered the residence close to the city of Verona to enforce an eviction order for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.
Each of the three deceased individuals were members of the Carabinieri force.
Arrests and Aftermath
A man and a woman were arrested at the location and one more individual who fled following the explosion was located shortly later. Each of them have been transported to hospital.
The explosion could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the scene revealed the building turned into a heap of debris.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.
Property Situation
The head of the region of Veneto, the regional head, stated the farmhouse was subject to an removal notice due to financial obligations accrued by the three owners.
Negotiators had been sent to speak to the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the property. When the police arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect one of the residents caused the blast.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander the police commander stated to reporters.
A gas canister had been activated, and the explosion precisely impacted our members,” he explained.
Petrol bombs were also found at the residence, the minister said.
Impact Assessment
Those injured by the blast included 11 other members of the military police as well as three members of the state police and a firefighter.
According to the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a derelict state and had no electricity.
The official was convinced the detonation had taken place on a story above the doorway and stated to the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the incident, he said members had “heard a whistle, presumably the gas canisters being opened”.
Local Response
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants informed local news, adding that the three had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
Defence Minister Guido Crosetto joined other political leaders in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had been killed in the service of their country.
